Hematite is a form of iron ore that is a grey/silver shiny metallic colour in appearance and very popular for use in the Jewellery industry. It’s a fairly hard mineral that’s quite heavy in comparison to some of the other semi-precious gemstones used for jewellery making. When ground or cut up Hematite has a similar appearance to rust because the fine grains scatter red light and give it a red brown appearance. In a solid state Hematite a much larger crystal structure than rust and is also polished to bring about its metallic appearance. The semi-precious gemstone sometimes spelt as Haematite gets its name from the Greek word ‘haima’ which means blood.
